A Murder of Crows

A group of crows or ravens is commonly referred to as a "murder". Many of our artists have incorporated ravens and crows into their art. During October you may amuse yourself looking for corvid art which will be placed throughout the gallery.

Arcata Artisans Partners With Others to be Green

When your purchase requires a box or bubble wrap you may be taking advantage of a green partnership to reduce and reuse local packaging materials. The Arcata Coop and the Shady Lady of McKinleyville have been recycling their packaging materials at Arcata Artisans Cooperative. Arcata Coop gets lots of small size boxes when their vendors send vitamins, cosmetics and other small items. Susan Johnson, owner of The Shady Lady supplies the bubble wrap many of her vendors send items wrapped with. Members of the art coop also bring in boxes and packaging materials for reuse. Sometimes the boxes are turned inside out so any commercial printing is gone and a plain box is obtained. The cooperative has fashioned a label which states "Arcata Artisans re-uses boxes to reduce waste". Says Artisans chairperson, Jim Lowry, "We want to do whatever we can to reduce the amount of packaging that goes into the landfill. Part of our mission is to use practices that lead to a better environment. We appreciate the local businesses that join us in this effort."

Sonderegger In Prestigious Sculpture Festival

I am participating in the 26th annual Sculpture in the Park Sculpture Festival. It's held in Benson park which has an enormous permanent sculpture garden. I was juried into the show last January and have been preparing suitable pieces since that time. I am taking 14 pieces - the maximum allowed. The festival takes a percentage of sales to support the public arts project. I am told there are 170 artists in four huge tents. There are artists from all over the country. Many are bronze sculptors as there are several active foundries in Loveland but there are artists of all sculpture media types.

After set up, there are some artist seminars on marketing etc. Then there is a patron's party to which they invite people who have purchased lots in the past. The regular event is Saturday and Sunday.
